The Mad Hatter

The school had dress up like your favorite book character.  Remi told us about it a month ago and decided he would like to go as The Mad Hatter from “Alice in Wonderland”.  Shame on me but I didn’t realize where the term “mad” hatter originated.   Long ago in hat factories, hat makers used glue which contained mercury.  Mercury makes one crazy or insane and thus the term “mad” hatter.  I had an “AHA” moment.  We loved Johnny Depp’s character, The Mad Hatter,  in the movie.  We studied his look and we were amazed at the intricate details found on his costume.  He had tons of  hat making supplies on his being, from colorful spools of thread to ribbons hanging from his pockets.  Adam picked up clothes at Goodwill and  sewed everything for Remi’s costume, except for the hair.  He made the hat from scratch.  He has about $20 total in his entire costume.  Is Remi the maddest “Mad Hatter” you have ever seen?  Oh my goodness, I LOVE him and his costume. He won first place in his class and second place in the school.

I must give Adam credit for this one. He made the hat from scratch. Goodwill really had a lot of things too. I think he looked pretty awesome too!
